An Etching is An intaglio process that uses a caustic material to cut an image into a metal plate. The plate is coated with a resistant emulsion or "ground", through which an image is drawn or scratched with a fine needle-like tool. The plate is then placed in a caustic bath that penetrates or cuts into the exposed areas, creating patterns that hold the ink.
